THE LEGEND OF AONGHUS AND CAER
As Remembered by Marian Moloney

There is a swan legend linked with Newgrange. It is the romantic story of Aonghus and Caer.  Aonghus was a chieftain of the Tuatha Dé Danann clan.  He resided at Brú Na Bóinne.  His father was the Daghdha of the Tuatha Dé Danann. His mother was Bóinn, the goddess of the river Boyne.

Aonghus fell madly in love with a maiden of his dreams.  For a year, as he slept, the maiden visited him in his dreams.  But, if he dared reach out to her she would disappear.  He enlisted the help of his mother to find her.  In order to help her son, Bóinn searched Ireland.  She searched for one whole year and could not find her.

Still yearning for his love Aonghus asked his father the Daghdha for help.  His father went to meet with Bodhbh, who was the king of the Tuatha Dé Danann in Munster.  Bodhbh said that the maiden was Caer Iobharmhéith.  Bodhbh brought Aonghus to meet with her at Loch Béal Dragan in Tipperary.  Bodhbh told him Caer was from Sídh Uamhain, in Connacht.

Caer’s father told the Daghdha that his daughter went in the forms of a swan and a maiden on alternate years and the following Samhain she would be a swan at Loch Béal Dragan.  The Daghdha told Aonghus to go there and call her to him.  Aonghus did as his father suggested.  At Loch Béal Dragan, Caer was in the form of a beautiful white swan, with over a hundred other swans for company.  She swam to him, and he too became a swan.  They embraced each other and flew around the lake three times.

They then flew to Brugh na Bóinne together. Caer remained with Aonghus in the Brugh after that.  They put the dwellers of Brú na Bóinne to sleep with their enchanting singing.  After many years living in both human and swan form they entered the Brough in human form just before Samhain with arms wrapped around each other for eternity.
